Indonesian Lawmaker Calls for BRICS Membership to Benefit Citizens

A member of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR), Amelia Anggraini, has called for the country's new BRICS membership to deliver concrete benefits to Indonesian citizens. She described Indonesia's decision to join the economic bloc as a strategic move that shows the nation's commitment to expanding its global governance role, according to Antaranews reporting.

"With Indonesia joining the bloc, BRICS has now become an even more inclusive and representative forum. It covers nearly half of the world's population and makes significant contributions to the global economy," Anggraini stated.

The lawmaker welcomed Indonesia's entry with optimism, calling it a historic step forward. She urged the country to maximize its membership by advancing national interests on the global stage.

Indonesia officially joined BRICS on January 6, 2025, bringing substantial economic power as the world's 16th-largest economy by nominal GDP and 8th-largest by purchasing power parity. With 281 million people, Indonesia is the fourth most populous nation globally and projected to grow at 5.1% annually from 2024 to 2026.

According to Anggraini, these national priorities include:

  • Strengthening digital sovereignty
  • Enhancing security cooperation
  • Ensuring green economy sustainability
  • Narrowing development gaps between countries

Indonesia now stands in a strategic position connecting BRICS with Southeast Asian nations. This creates opportunities to broaden economic and geopolitical diplomacy networks while building synergy between ASEAN and BRICS economic blocs.

"Indonesia's membership of BRICS also reflects global trust in the nation's ability and stability to lead various international initiatives," she added.

From a parliamentary perspective, Anggraini stated that she will work to promote cooperation among BRICS country legislatures to address public interests, economic justice, technology access, and food sovereignty.
