European Union Stands Firm on Digital Rulebook Despite US Concerns

The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing digital regulations on major tech companies regardless of their leadership or country of origin. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told Politico that the EU will apply its digital rulebook without bias.
"That's why we've opened cases against TikTok, X, Apple, Meta just to name a few. We apply the rules fairly, proportionally, and without bias. We don't care where a company's from and who's running it. We care about protecting people," von der Leyen stated on Sunday.
The EU's Digital Markets Act aims to create a level playing field and provide consumers with more choices. The legislation establishes specific guidelines for tech giants including Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Booking.com, ByteDance, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft.
US President Donald Trump has expressed opposition to the EU's digital regulations. In February, Trump signed a memorandum announcing his administration would review the bloc's Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act, which he described as dictating "how American companies interact with consumers in the European Union."
EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera recently announced that decisions regarding potential breaches of the landmark tech rules by Apple and Meta will be issued in the coming weeks. These determinations will address whether the companies have violated regulations designed to limit their market power.
According to sources who spoke with Reuters last month, both Apple and Meta are expected to face modest fines for violations of the Digital Markets Act. The EU continues to pursue enforcement actions against major technology platforms.
The tensions over EU regulations come amid broader US-EU trade frictions. California recently filed a lawsuit challenging President Trump's tariff authority, with Governor Newsom claiming the measures could cost the state billions in revenue. Trump's administration has imposed tariffs reaching up to 145 percent on various imports.
